A question that arose during a conversation with a fellow mom, from not a very good financial background(read to the end, to know why I said this), “What is Phonics ? Is it a new hype in the education world or is it a new marketing gimmick of these big coaching classes and tuitions???” This led me to analyse the scenario for the better understanding of the current situation.
Well, there are two sides of the same coin, that means there are two perspectives of the same situation, a good one and a not-so-good-one. The not-so-good-one is that, it has become very common to open up Phonics classes in every nook and corner, without having the credibility to do so. So, the person collects some information from the internet, puts it all together, without having the correct knowledge of it and opens up a class to teach children. But, its so wrong, to do so, without formally going through the training by himself.
And the good part is “Yes, Phonics is important in teaching a child to read and write correctly.” But, to this many a few question that, we have been grown up without learning Phonics in our school, and we can read and write just fine, without learning it. But they tend to forget to recall the times, when they had written wrong spellings, and when they had got less marks due to silly spelling mistakes, and when they had to rote learn every single word, without knowing how to correctly pronounce the words and its spelling in order to write it properly. Phonics eliminates that efforts to a certain extent. It teaches the child the correct techniques to code and decode a word, without having to rote-learn it. Ofcourse, there are exceptional words which do not follow the Phonics Rules, and the children have to learn by sight and memorizing only, but they are very few, compared to the whole English Language.
Another misconception is to teach the child Phonics through Youtube videos. But parents forget to understand that Phonics CANNOT be taught through youtube videos, just like the whole education can’t be done through that. Its a humble request to all my dear parents, You CANNOT learn Phonics through Youtube. Please get yourself(as a parent) trained by a proper and credential trainer. Youtube is very misleading and once you teach the child the incorrect sounds, it is very difficult to correct their Articulation. Phonics is not just about sounds but the correct positioning of the tongue against the palate, the vibrations of the vocal chords which result into voiced sounds and less or no vibration into unvoiced sounds. You may think that this is not important but this lays the foundation of correct articulation and pronunciation of words and develop the skill of being a good orator.
Scientific studies have repeatedly shown that explicit systematic phonics instruction is the most effective way to teach children how to read. Without it, some children will end up having serious reading difficulties. Phonics – teaching children the sounds made by individual letter or letter groups (for example, the letter “c” makes a k sound), and teaching children how to merge separate sounds together to make it one word (for example, blending the sounds k, a, t makes CAT). This type of phonics teaching is often referred to as “synthetic phonics”.English has a complicated spelling system. It is important to teach letter sound mappings in a systematic way, beginning with simple letter sound rules and then moving onto more complex associations. The term “phonics” has been used quite loosely by several reading programs, with some straying from these fundamental principles. For example, some programs, teach phonics by asking children to guess unfamiliar words using cues, such as the meaning of a word gleaned from sentence context. Other programs ask children to look at words (for example, pig, page, pen all start with the same sound) and learn letter-sound rules by analysing or making comparisons between those words (analogy or analytical phonics). These programs are not as effective as those focusing on letter-sound knowledge taught in an explicit and systematic fashion.
Will it really improve reading?
So will more effective phonics instruction really help to improve these ?
Of course, reading effectively (whether to learn or for pleasure) is not just about phonics or having a decent store of single words.
Functional reading requires several other skills such as good vocabulary, the ability to extract inferences, and synthesise and hold information in memory across several sentences. But if your single word reading is not efficient, comprehension is going to be dramatically affected. Effective phonics instruction is important because letter-sound knowledge is the foundation needed to build up reading and writing abilities.
So, investing in yourself and your child is very essential , if you want to have good and less stressing path in your child’s academics. Give your child the right tools and he will be good in Academics. Happy Learning!!
If you want to learn Phonics, and need a complete Curriculum to teach your children, check out our flagship “The Reading Classroom – Online Phonics Program for Parents and Teachers” here.
I am sure this program will be an immediate boost in your confidence and positivity to teach your child at the comfort of your home. If you follow my suggestions , you may also see changes in your child’s reading. You may discover the reasons of some reading and writing errors that your child is making. And you will be better equipped to deal with them in more educated manner.
Such an informative post. There is lot of misconceptions that are definitely answered in this post. I agree switching on YouTube videos and letting kids watch is a wrong way. You don’t even know the one that you chose is good or not.
Thanks for such a detailed analysis om this subject.. I am actually against the phonic style of teaching as you mentioned how many just don’t know and start a class anywhere.. I’ll connect with you soon
Thanks for clearing up so many doubts I had related to phonics. What do you suggest is the right age to start with phonics?
phonics are like building blocks for our speech so they’re very essential. great informative post.
This comes to me at the correct time, I am thinking of putting my son in a phonics class. He turned . three, now maybe its a good time.
Phonetics are such an important facets of our repository of language and more so in English language, the language not being our mother tongue. Most of the schools don’t give the importance and students learn the way they grasp it. They commit so many mistakes. Many parents are not aware of power of phonetics in developing the oratory skill and give the strength to the voice of their children. Speaking matters a lot and it comes from our hold on the word and the way we voice our sentences. This is indeed a formal training programme and one should get the learning done from a trained personnel. Yes there are so may training institutions have come up and many have just pulled things from here and there, and have started giving the programmes .Thanks for sharing it and very useful reading for all parents…

A very helpful post. I feel sad when parents leave thinhs on YT. It’s ok but we need to talk to.
nice post to help understand the parents about teaching phonics to their kids.
Yes, Phonics is important. Recognizing the sound of alphabets helps in spellings. It helps in strong reading skills. But as you mentioned, today every second street has English phonics classes. I am not very machine favor of success classes.

A very informative and comprehensive post. I am sure it will help many.
Interesting. I have heard of phonetics of course, but not phonics system of learning. The concept sounds similar though. Agree that pronunciation and enunciation is the key for language learning for children.
Wonderful Deevyanka, I have been introduced to the concept of Phonics a year back, as my preschooler started with it. And it has been a consistent journey. Thanks for highlighting that YouTube cannot teach kids and parents phonics as I see so many parents doing that. Phonics are important for the right base and start of a child’s real learning and we as parents need to understand that.
You have made some excellent points. As an English teacher of lower primary kids I want to add that many parents try to teach their children at home – using alphabets instead of phonics. This creates a very confused child.
Tried to find a way to follow your blog but the follow buttons aren’t visible. At least not on the mobile. Is your site mobile friendly?
Phonics does have its advantages, especially for kids who don’t speak English at home. I agree that without formal training it can be confusing. I taught a bit of it to my kids but with help from a friend who’s well-trained in it.
It is better not to learn something than to learn it incorrectly. When I was a kid there was nothing like phonics. But at my daughter’s school, they did teach her phonics. Your article is indeed very informative and exhaustive. Thanks for explaining some of the aspects of Phonics that always puzzled me and about which I had no idea. #MyFriendAlexa #JaiSReads
I didn’t enroll my daughter in phonics class because I didn’t feel it was necessary. We gréw up without learning in classes and we were fine. If you have a good English teacher at school or mother you don’t need phonics classes.
Well said. Children start learning their own mother tongue at age 1 by listening to parents and elders and neighbors not from any coaching class. Good teachers at school and educated parents can help the children read/write/speak English very well.
Thank you for writing such an informative and helpful article. I had no clue about Phonics until. I read this post.
I’m getting to know about phonics for the first time now. I googled and got this doubt. How is it different from phonetics?
Interesting read. I didn’tknow about phonics till i read it here, so i do feel ignorant. But I dont have a kid either, so maybe it’s ok. 🙂
Very informative indeed
This is an important post. As I understood, phonics teach us how to pronounce a word properly by putting correct emphasis on each segment of a word. When I was growing up, it was taught in school. I was not going to a private school. When I came to Delhi, I found that many of my friends say words differently. As a result they write the spelling also differently. I do not know if one can learn phonics from a coach by paying money. If schools teach well and ask students to practice infant of others , then the problem may be solved.
A very in-depth post on an important topic in the overall development of a child. Will surely share this information with those who need it.
This is a really an informative post for parents like us, I wasn’t so aware that phonics play an important part. Thanks for sharing
Did not have much idea about Phonic, this post has enriched my knowledge.
Thanks for the nice write up. Never heard about Phonics before. Informative post, but does it burden the kid with additional tution times? Can it be embedded into school curriculum?
A quite relevant subject dealt in detail, with the seriousness it deserves.
I swear by phonics… Both my kids learnt reading and writing through phonics. I must confess I didn’t know about it before I had kids of my own. We were in the US at that time and phonics was the popularly used mode of teaching there. Great post. Thanks for sharing.
my son learned phonics 13 years before. but i feel it was quite a waste of money , well opinion differs. an informative post for parents who wish to enrol their kids in phonics enrichment.
Never went into this much detail while teaching Phonics to my children. Thanks for sharing:)
Phonics obviously plays an important role in a kid’s education. A highly relevant post for those who have growing kids.
Phonics is definitely important. I remember my teacher used to use phonics to teach us spellings, but it wasn’t a full-fledged course at that time and did not have much focus on it. I have always followed your posts on phonics and looking forward to this series too.
Very informative post. We’ve all been guilty of clicking the youtube phonics videos for our kids. Thanks for clearing the misconceptions.
very informative post. Phonics do play an important role in the learning graph of kids.
#mannreads
A very informative post. I have only recently started to volunteer and we were going to do phonics with the students. This has been an eye opener. Thank you.
Phonics is important but one should have complete knowledge before imparting the same. When my daughter started reading, phonics was introduced in school. She picked it up very quickly and started reading as well. I did not send her for any extra phonic coaching as I wanted her to comply with what was taught in school.
It is a new age thing..agreed Phonics were always there but we never learnt. My spelling was and is perfect but then I like to move with the times and I wud like my grandchildren to learn phonics. #MyAlexaReads #wordsmithkaurreads
My son’s school took a phonics class for all the parents. And it was really helpful. I will definitely ping u in case I get stuck somewhere.
This is an eye-opener for me atleast. Our school english teacher had made sure to teach us Phonetics. I am not sure about kids getting enrolled in separate classes for it though!
Phonetics play an important role in learning language
This is usually ignored in Indian education system most of the times.
#msarorasays
Very detailed and informative post. Phonics indeed is important and helps the children in spelling and recognizing the sounds. Leaving things on the screen to learn is not a good idea and I don’t practice it.#vartikasdiaryreading #myfriendalexa
So true, half learning is always bad. teaching yourself first is surely gonna help. Great post and glad I could connect. here. Thanks to #MyfriendAlexa
Phonics really can’t be taught through youtube videos. in-depth post about a relevant topic.
Learned a lot…never being so clear about phonics.
I was introduced to the concept of phonics via a YouTube video.
I used her video and went to the free resources she shared. Write up some words and exercises on chart paper bad worked with her videos to teach myself bad my son words.
Words made him cry, cringe and detest school.
He was finding it difficult to read, even more difficult to write and everyday was a struggle.
Using that one video life turned around for us. Within a couple of days he started reading on his own.
His attitude towards studies bad school took much longer to change.
Today a year later he can read a 250 page book on his own. He reads national geographic, he reads Enid blyton, he reads newspapers bad his curiosity is insatiable
Now he is the 3rd standard and I owe this all to that day when I watched that video that changed my life around.
#myfriendalexa #indiabeautyreads
Very informative and comprehensive. It’ll help many parents to decide.
Very informative and I couldnt agree more.. I myself
Took phonics training last year only so that I can teach my daughter correctly
Thank you for such an informative post. Education system has improved a lot within few years. When we were in school, we used to catch how the teacher pronounced words. But there were so many words we learned wrong since the teacher pronounced it wrong throughout our school life. When finally someone corrected us, it was too late. Correcting a word that we used for years takes a lot of practice. So I think teaching phonics must be of great relavance to kids. Happy to know about it. ☺️
This is an interesting post. My nephew is being taught phonics at school and when asked his parents said that children are being trained differently to make them understand words. It felt nice, helping them sound the words and letters out loud, it felt their shyness would go away early by learning through various sounds.
It’s definitely one of those western influenced trends you’re talking about! We were never thought phonics in our childhood and yet somewhere I believe we are indeed doing good without it. However, since it has been included in the curriculum, it’s better to leave the child to grow with the flow rather than denying the need for it and confusing the kids.
Informative post. Answers a lot of questions and clears misconceptions.
Good insights into world of phonics. Often we get baffled on how to go ahead with teaching phonics to young kids. It’s helpful
I really admire and follow you when it comes to teaching such stuff to my kid, you are doing great & thanks for such detailed post
Interesting post. Forget about the need of knowledge of Phonics, a lot of people don’t even know what it is! Glad you wrote on this topic.
Phonics is important for word recognition . Teaching language has undergone a huge change since the dark ages when children first learnt the alphabets and then learnt to read words. Phonics is specially useful in Indian languages where the rules are more consistent.
This is very helpful for me. I have been wondering how to do this and if I could do this on my own. But as you write its best to do this through a trained professional.
A very informative post. Yes phonics is very important in pronouncing as well as spelling a word correctly.
This is so needed topic to be discussed and my little one in school learning it and it really effect a lot
I remember we learnt the phonetics in 7th grade. ICSE literature and language classes were so much fun then. It felt like experimenting with words. Language labs. I do understand the need of it now. It’s great that kids would be learning these from the very first stage now….
Interesting post. I had no idea of phonics and that they were so important.
Thanks for sharing this in depth article!
Nicely evaluated, very helpful information
A lot of in-depth info about phonics there. My kid learns it really well from school but I haven’t been able to grasp it yet. But I see how the 5 year olds are easily able to read because for it
#greenladyreads #MyFriendAlexa #firstgreenstep
these are useful and nice i have been attending every month in my kid’s school..
#simireads
#MyFriendAlexa
I have not enrolled my kids for enrichment or tuition classes as I feel if we work with them it is easier to learn at home too.
Nice and informative post! We as Parent’s should definitely go through trainings and not just use youtube to teach phonics. I totally agree with you if the basics go wrong then it would be difficult to correct them later. Keep writing! #MyFriendAlexa #SurReads
Phonetics is one of the ways to help the child read the words without memorizing their spellings. Both my children were taught the phonetics in school and I could see them becoming independent readers very early in life.
I wholeheartedly agree with the point that youtube is not how you want to teach your kids. I guess it’s easy to stream videos, which is steering modern parents towards that. An informative post indeed!
Anmol recently posted This lasagna looks exquisite; let me share it on my Instagram!
I have been hearing a lot about this too. Off late taken the spike in number of books being sold through online channel for it.
Indeed an eyeopening post.
Phonics help a lot in shaping the early years of academics of the child. This is a very informative post.
This was a super informative post, I had heard about phonics in a WA group from you. I never knew it was this important 🙂
#vigorousreads #MyFriendAlexa
I remember a big hype about phonics when my kids were small. They actually help kids to read as the sounds actually help them to understand the words.
yes, i remember when my elder started with phonix even i was irritated with it. But later i got to know how important it was.
This is something I did not know at all! Thanks for sharing:)
no one can understand the The importance of phonics than me who hails from Odisha, a state where English is spoken with Odiya ascent. A year back one of my friends started a Phonics class and wanted me to be apart of it . However, I couldn’t make it for some other priorities that time. Phonics is important but for my son, i think he doesn’t need as he is quite good in writing , reading and speaking, English. Its a beautiful write up.
Thanks Deevyanka for sharing such a detailed analysis on Phonics. Correcting a wrong thing learnt in the process is more difficult than learning a totally new thing. So, being parents, we need to focus on the kid’s basics.
Interesting. What’s the right age for introducing phonics study for a kid?
Heyy deevyanka this was a detailed post that cleared quite a few doubts that I had, whem do you suggest introduction to Phonics, asking for my 2 yr old.
Great info about phonics. I got introduced to phonics when my son started his preschool. I tried learning from youtube to teach him but saw different versions and was unsure of the reliable source. I understand now that they are very important for reading.
This is the first time I heard about it. Frankly i do not understand the introduction of such fancy tools of learning. It was very simple when i was of that age. I do not understand the need of it. As you pointed out rightly children can certainly get along well with education even without all these fancy tools of learning at their disposal.
Perfect timing. We are working on phonics currently. I agree with the importance of phonics in every language, minimizes spelling mistakes.. #MyFriendAlexa #momlearningwithbaby
As you rightly said we learnt our spellings without phonics and did just fine but it was rite learning to a great extent. When. we have effective tools why not use them. My Mom is a certified Phonics trainer and when I see the way she teaches my daughter, it amazes me #MyFriendAlexa
When it started in school for my daughter I was really worried about how will I teach her since I have no idea. But then I think Phonics is logical sounds!! It really helped me as well and made reading easier for my daughter
Wonderful information Deevyanka and I definitely agree with the Youtube point. Most parents these days want to make their task simpler by simply handing their kids to youtube.

Phonics indeed is the buzzword. My daughter learnt it for 3 years and I realised that the teacher and teaching style is the most important. If not done correctly, it can mess things up instead of improving. oh and completely agree with your You tube video assessment!
Thank you for sharing this, I do think the font size of the blog can be a little bigger. 🙂
I would let my son’s teacher teach him phonics 😛 He is almost ready for pre-school
I learnt a new thing today. I didn’t know anything about phonics and how much important they are for children. Would love to know more about it.
Finally an article on phonics! I am tutoring a seven year old and I wanted to begin with phonics and the basics. But his parents don’t understand how important it is. They insist that he just learn answers by heart. He does it under pressure and forgets it the next day 🙁

Phonics is really a very important part of a child’s development…….very informative post indeed !
Cheers

Well written. Phonics has become one of the most talked about topics among the parents of younger kids. I agree that it is good to know more about it for the better grasp on the language but I oppose the idea of getting special classes for the same. Instead, the basic habits of listening and reading, from good sources, should be inculcated in children. Continuous practice of speaking and writing the language will eventually lead to mastering it.
Informative post indeed. it’s important to do our research before switching to the youtube videos.
Honestly me and mt little girl talked to each other in English, Bengali simultaneously.Luckily we managed without phonics professional classes.I dont remember it was such a big deal even in our childhood. What was your childhood learning like? How were you taught?
Being an English educator and communication skills trainer I can totally relate to this post. It’s high time when we need to wotk on the way English is taught in our country generally.
Thanks. Was really not aware of much of this. have to read more posts
Wish I had come across your blog when my son was younger… I had struggled teaching him phonetics… But I must say it is extremely helpful…as they grow up and start learn G bigger words it helps immensely
Nice info about the importance of phonics. I am yet to enter the trauma of phonics, and hope to sail through it
